It's not a matter of taste, just recognition of the obvious fact that being an extremely popular artist means that you're talented, no matter what pretentious haters say about it.

Think of _every_ popular actor or artist. Do you think every one of them is talented? If so, it sounds like you’re basing your understanding of talent on what other people think.
