I’m pretty sure that the SMP kernel would boot on UP and vice versa, though.
Yes but a SMP kernel on a UP system would be slightly but noticeably slower. And a UP kernel on an SMP system wouldn’t use the second processor - and rarely, wouldn’t boot.
But even in the era of LILO you could switch kernels pretty easily.
