alt Hacker NewsCMD + V to paste an image is wrong.
On Mac it's the same as Windows, CTRL + V.
You use CMD + V to paste text.

I thought it was CTRL SHIFT V. Is that Linux only? Ctrl V sends some kind of funky key combo.

Yes, this also applies to some other commands as well: CTRL+G opens the external editor, not CMD+G on Mac.
