The analogies the author highlights the multi-purpose nature of these machines, which I believe persists to this day, and is why some people have a hard time adopting Linux (Or why UAC was controversial in an older Win version): The conflation of personal computers, and a multi-user IT systems or servers. The IT story of Wal-Mart used to make the analogy is in the latter category.
