Nonetheless that hasn't stopped us from almost deifying the founding fathers. If not for the fact that many of them were slaveowners, they'd be deified already. Clearly, US society hasn't advanced beyond deification of its leaders, whether past or present.

Also, although they involve Gods, the Iliad and Odyssey are not religious texts in the sense of the Bible. They were epic legendary poems, not scriptures.
