Note that in the only reasonably-close-to-contemporary story of the run, the marathon run itself came at the end of a multi-day run from Marathon to Sparta and back, about a 300 mile round trip. The marathon run was just the last 26.2.

I thought the (1).2 was added so that the first modern marathon at the London Olympics (1908) could finish in front of the King? Before that the 'marathon' was 25 miles. And the 300 mile round trip is at least partially replicated in the modern Spartathlon [1]
