You think the Germans and Italians and whatnot were all educated middle-class who moved to the US because it seemed "fun"?
For decades the US has managed to be the most powerful economy in the world while taking in tons of these immigrants. Rejecting them is likely to have a negative impact. Xenophobia comes at a cost.
