For context, the organization is "left-wing" as in "hosting antifa", not as in "giving unfortunate people a social net". Very far to the left, self recognized radical activists.

Well, a proto-fascist government would consider hosting anti-fascist websites as being "far left".
The point is not what kind of policies the "radical left" tech guys had. The point is they had quarter century run in which law enforcement in Italy could not find anything illegal in their actions.
And The current US administration was like "we don't care that running a webserver for activists is legal in Italy, we will just declare them terrorists".
Which is precisely why it's important that criminals and even terrorists have rights and due process. Else they can just declare YOU a terrorist and suddenly you have no rights.
