Both Google Maps and Apple Maps changed it for users in the United States.
MapQuest public refused, causing literally dozens of people to ask, "MapQuest is still a thing?"
It actually happened. The US GNIS system was updated, and thus the apple maps and google maps have updated their maps to reflect
Other map providers will have to make a decision, but these sorts of things have historically been fraught with politics, I think most maps will go with whatever the official source they use has declared
