I don't even think the cheap used cars are a more expensive way to live on average. If you get unlucky or scammed, sure.
Nobody is selling you a used Lexus or Toyota or Honda for cheap. It is usually a nondescript brand and model, like a geo metro or a model with known reliability issues.
