Given the choice between a front loader or top loader without an agitator, the front loader wins easily. They use less water and do a much better job cleaning.

I will note that the locking mechanism on my LG is quite strong. I tried to get past the safety lock (for high-temp washes) but couldn't get in. And in the case of catastrophic failure, you'll have much less water (and weight) to deal with vs the top load.
