I wouldn’t say the quality of life is higher. Incomes are lower, taxes higher and we know disposable income is linked to quality of life to a degree.

Also, GDP per capita is what pays taxes. Taxes pay for social programs and infrastructure.

The EU is going to have a lot of trouble paying for social programs if its economy is in the dumps.
