My grandad on one side of the family was a market gardener. He didn't become a farmer.

My great grandad on the other side was a lighterman[0]. He didn't become a ship captain.

Sometimes professions really are just gone. In both cases in my family it was due to consolidation of resources and concentration of capital/power. Technology was just a catalyst for that.
