It wasn’t the exact strain, the mutations were nothing like you’d expect them to make, and good lord people on HN need better news and science sources if this is still the level of discussion on the topic.

Pangolins actually - they carried a strain of the virus that had the ability to infect human cells via ACE2 receptor.

The bat variant did not have that - wet market - close proximity - a fortuitous gene swap and hey presto.
