“All interest groups should have the ability to talk to lawmakers and present their viewpoints.”

Why can’t they pick up the phone or write a letter like the rest of us?

They do.

And you are also free to visit your representative's at their offices.

For example, Congress is open to visit - you can request a pass for specific sessions, you can schedule meetings with congressional staffers (face to face with the actual congressman is harder, but theoretically possible), etc. Local and state reps are typically easier to visit.
