Since webp is little more than a vp8 iframe, and most SoCs already have a hardware vp8 video decoder, the additional hardware cost to decode webp is zero. Just takes a bit of firmware development effort.

And while hardware image decoders might be dubious, hardware video decoders are very much worth it.
