alt Hacker NewsI bet for a short golden age where AI will reap the low hanging fruit of easy (for a computer) cross-referencing and inference. And then a dark age with none interested in putting new ideas out in the field. Hopefully, I am wrong.

That's a pretty nuanced answer and I suspect you are more likely to be right than anybody picking either option in isolation.
Could very well be true.
For example, will anyone take on the Riemann hypothesis now, knowing that AI might solve it any day. But then, if AI can never solve it, we will have lost out on all the human effort that would have given us great new theories and insights along the way.
All the work that would give rise to new discoveries might now never even get started. That is depressing.
