First of all, i don’t know why you are talking about engineers. This is a business decision, not an engineering one.

Are they? I associate meta with the “move fast and break things” philosophy, not engineering excelence.

I’m sure there are some fine engineers there. But by and large it is just a big company with questionable ethics and lots of money.
